17:40 Dr. R. Cooke
- Consultant Medical Microbiologist and Honary Senior Lecturer in Medical Microbiology,University of Liverpool
Title: Clinical overview of the microbiological hazards of water
Summary: Many types of waterborne micro-organisms have been implicated in human infections, including outbreaks from both recreational and drinking water sources. The epidemiology and clinical management of such infections will be reviewed.
18:00 Simon in ‘t Veld
- Manager microbiology Vitens laboratories, Leeuwarden.
Title: Microbial chain analysis for potable water
Summary: A unique study has been performed, where the microbial content of potable water was analyzed from well to purification plant to tap. Quantity of fungi presence was compared to quantity of bacteria and pathogenicity of fungi was correlated to sample location.
18:20 Dr. Astrid H. Paulitsch
- Ph-D medical university of Gratz, Austria, Post-doc at top water research institute Wetsus, Leeuwarden.
Title: Analysis of fungal biofilms and microbial retention
Summary: An in depth study will be presented on the structural arrangement and composition of fungal biofilm on indwelling medical devices. Furthermore, retention of fungi and bacteria by membrane technology for up to half a year will be shown by plate count and scanning electron microscopy data.
18:40 Simone Camps
- Doctoral student Department of Medical Microbiology Radboud University Nijmegen
Title: Retention of Legionella and fungi in the clinical situation
Summary: In 2009 Norit Filtrix Medical filters have been applied at a hospital with an increased Legionella count in shower water. Analysis of water from 5 different departments showed presence of fungi, next to Legionella. By application of filters both Legionella and pathogenic fungi were completely eliminated.
